Wisconsin horseback tour operator allegedly killed by ex-boyfriend in brutal assault on Caribbean island

U.S. authorities and Caribbean police investigate the death of Karen Johannsen following a violent assault during a beach tour

A 66-year-old American horseback tour operator from Wisconsin has died following a brutal assault on a Caribbean island, with authorities alleging the attack was carried out by her former boyfriend. The killing has sent shockwaves through both the local community in Antigua and the U.S. hometown she left behind.

What Happened in Antigua

According to the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, Karen Johannsen was attacked while leading a horseback riding tour on Runaway Beach on the morning of December 19. Investigators say she was struck forcefully in the back of the head with an unknown object, causing catastrophic injuries.

Johannsen was rushed to a local hospital with severe head trauma, multiple broken bones, and a fractured jaw. Due to the seriousness of her condition, she was later airlifted to the United States for advanced medical treatment.

Victim Identified as Wisconsin Native

Johannsen, originally from Madison, succumbed to her injuries on December 26, one day after Christmas, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. Her death was confirmed by both U.S. and Caribbean authorities.

Family members identified the suspected attacker as Johannsen’s former boyfriend. He was taken into police custody in Antigua shortly after the incident. As of this writing, it remains unclear whether formal charges have been filed, as the investigation is ongoing.

A Life Built Around Horses and the Sea

Johannsen had been living in Antigua for several years and operated a horseback tour business popular with tourists. Her social media accounts frequently showed horses running along turquoise shorelines and moments of quiet beach life, reflecting a lifestyle centered on animals, nature, and travel.

She was also the daughter of the former owners of Johannsen’s Greenhouse, a long-standing family business that served the Madison community for more than 50 years.

Investigation Continues

Authorities in Antigua have offered condolences to Johannsen’s family and are urging anyone with information related to the assault to come forward. Police say they are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

The case has renewed concerns about personal safety for expatriates and tourism workers abroad, particularly in situations involving domestic or former intimate partners.

Remembering Karen Johannsen

Friends and family describe Johannsen as adventurous, independent, and deeply devoted to her work with horses. What was meant to be a peaceful life built around nature ended in sudden violence, leaving loved ones on two continents searching for answers and justice.

As investigators work across borders, Johannsen’s death stands as a tragic reminder of how quickly personal relationships can turn deadly—and how far the consequences can reach.
