Long Island Man Accused of Grooming, Assaulting, and Robbing 12-Year-Old Boy After Contact on Mobile App

Prosecutors allege the suspect used a social networking app to gain access to a child, leading to a serious criminal case now unfolding in New York

A troubling case from Long Island has sparked widespread concern after prosecutors announced that a 34-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting and robbing a 12-year-old boy he allegedly met through a mobile app earlier this month.

Authorities say the incident took place inside the child’s own home, underscoring renewed fears about online grooming and the real-world risks posed to minors through digital platforms.

Incident Allegedly Occurred Inside Family Home

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the child was alone inside his family’s residence in Amityville on December 6 when the suspect arrived at the home.

Prosecutors allege that Marquise Utsey, 34, had previously made contact with the boy online. Once inside the house, Utsey is accused of committing a sexual assault and then demanding money from the child.

Fearing for his safety, the boy reportedly went into a family member’s bedroom and handed over cash he found there, according to a statement from prosecutors.

Online Contact Raised Serious Red Flags

Investigators say the boy and Utsey first connected on what was described as a “social networking and dating mobile app.” Authorities have not named the platform involved but emphasized that the suspect and the victim were complete strangers prior to their online interaction.

In a statement, Raymond Tierney condemned the alleged conduct in strong terms.

“The conduct alleged in this indictment reflects utterly reprehensible behavior and a profound betrayal of human decency,” Tierney said. “The defendant was a complete stranger who allegedly used a mobile app to gain access to a child for his own benefit.”

Suspect Allegedly Left the Scene

Prosecutors say the suspect fled the home following the alleged incident. When the boy’s parents later returned, the child disclosed what had happened, prompting them to immediately contact law enforcement.

An investigation was launched shortly afterward, leading to Utsey’s arrest. Officials say he is a resident of Massapequa.

Charges Filed and Bail Set

Utsey has been charged with multiple felony offenses, including rape, sexual abuse, robbery, and endangering the welfare of a child. He was indicted earlier this week and is currently being held on $750,000 cash bond.

If convicted on all counts, prosecutors say he faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison.

Renewed Concerns Over Online Safety for Children

The case has renewed warnings from authorities and child safety advocates about the risks minors face when using social networking and dating-style apps. Officials continue to urge parents to remain vigilant, monitor online activity, and maintain open conversations with children about digital safety.

Prosecutors noted that the case remains active and emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious online interactions to authorities as early as possible.

As the legal process moves forward, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how online contact can escalate into serious real-world harm when safeguards fail.
