The man suspected of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson comes from a wealthy Maryland family prominent in their local community — and even has a cousin who is a state lawmaker.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was raised in the leafy Baltimore suburb of Towson by a family owning two sprawling country clubs — the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, and the Hayfields Country Club in Cockeysville.
His family has also developed numerous properties throughout the area, and owns a local radio station.

Mangione is the cousin of Republican Baltimore County Delegate Nino Mangione, the politician’s office confirmed to WBAL TV.
He was arrested Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania — a small, rural city in the heart of the state — after a restaurant worker recognized him from wanted posters and called police.
When cops arrived and asked him for identification, he allegedly handed them a fake ID — the same one the suspect used to check into a New York City hostel before allegedly carrying out the execution-style murder on December 4.

He was also carrying a pistol, three other fake IDs, and a manifesto railing against authority with proclamations like “these parasites simply had it coming,” law enforcement sources told The Post.
Since Mangione’s arrest, details have begun pouring out about his privileged life.

He attended the roughly $40,000-per-year all-boys Gilman School from sixth through 12th grades, where he graduated in 2016 as valedictorian and gave a speech about how “incredible courage” is needed to “challenge the world.”
Gilman Academy faculty confirmed Mangione was an alumnus.
“This is deeply distressing news on top of an already awful situation. Our hearts go out to everyone affected,” the school told WBAL.

“Here on campus, our focus will remain on caring for and educating the boys. Thank you for your understanding,” they added.
After Gilman, Mangione went to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in computer science and engineering at the Ivy League school.
Social media posts since his graduation show him traveling the world with entourages of friends to places such as Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
A motive in the killing remains unclear.

Mangione’s digital footprint has left behind a smattering of political opinions — ranging from the outlandish to the common — that run the gamut across the aisle, but largely rail at societal and systemic forces eroding human dignity.
The banner photo of his X profile also shows an X-ray of a human back with multiple pins inserted into the spine, while his Goodreads profile indicates he’s read books about back pain.
Mangione is suspected of ambushing Thompson on a Midtown sidewalk as he left his hotel early in the morning, and gunning the CEO down with a homemade bolt-action pistol.
The killer then fled by bicycle and disappeared into Central Park, sparking a massive manhunt.
Mangione was arraigned on weapons charges Monday evening in a Pennsylvania court, and is being held without bail.
Delegate Mangione’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
