The former Strictly contestant and TV doctor opens up about months of private treatment, fear, and recovery
Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant and well-known TV doctor Dr Punam Krishan has revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer, sharing a deeply emotional message with her followers after completing treatment.

In a candid Instagram post, Dr Krishan explained that she had kept her diagnosis private for months while undergoing treatment, describing the experience as far more difficult than she ever imagined.
“You Have Cancer”: The Moment Everything Changed
Dr Krishan told followers that five months ago she heard the words “nobody ever wants to hear.”
She explained that despite nearly two decades working as a doctor and supporting patients through serious diagnoses, nothing prepared her for being on the receiving end herself. She described the shock, fear, and trauma of that moment, admitting that medical knowledge offered little comfort when faced with her own mortality.
Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Months of Treatment
Dr Krishan confirmed she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since taken life “one day at a time.” She praised the NHS teams who cared for her, from her GP through to her breast and oncology specialists, while acknowledging just how physically and emotionally exhausting the process has been.
She said that while she feels grateful and relieved to have completed treatment, she remains shaken by the experience, noting that multiple emotions can exist at once during recovery.

Why She Chose to Keep It Private
Explaining why she only shared the news now, Dr Krishan said she wanted to protect her energy and, above all, her children. She credited her husband, family, and a small group of close friends for carrying her through the darkest moments.
She reflected that serious illness quickly clarifies who and what truly matters in life.
Early Detection Saved Her Life
One of the strongest messages in her post focused on early detection. Dr Krishan said her cancer was identified after an unusual feeling and a gut instinct prompted her to act.
She urged people to know their bodies, trust themselves, and seek medical advice early if something does not feel right, stressing that early detection saved her life.

Support Floods In From Strictly and Beyond
Messages of support poured in from across entertainment and medical circles. Her former Strictly professional partner Gorka Marquez left an encouraging message, telling her he knew she would get through it.
Fellow Strictly professional Amy Dowden, who has also battled breast cancer, wrote words of solidarity, while TV doctors, presenters, and radio hosts sent messages of love and encouragement.
Life After Strictly and Recovery Ahead
Dr Krishan appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2024 and was eliminated midway through the competition. Since then, she has continued her work as a respected TV doctor and health advocate.
She ended her message by reminding followers that health outweighs work, possessions, and perfection, saying she will share more of her journey when she is ready.
Breast Cancer Awareness Reminder
According to the NHS, common symptoms of breast cancer can include lumps or swelling in the breast or armpit, changes in breast shape or skin, nipple changes, and persistent pain. Dr Krishan’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to your body and acting early.
As she continues to heal, Dr Punam Krishan’s openness has resonated widely, offering both reassurance and awareness to thousands following her recovery.
