Gunfire breaks out during funeral gathering in Utah
A deadly shooting outside a Mormon church in Utah left two people dead and at least six others wounded on Wednesday night, turning a funeral service into a scene of chaos and tragedy. Authorities say the violence unfolded in the parking lot of a church in Salt Lake City as dozens of mourners were gathered inside to attend a funeral.
According to police, eight adults were struck by gunfire when shots rang out around 7:30 p.m. outside a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Redwood Road.

Victims and injuries confirmed by police
The Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed that two victims died at the scene, while six others were transported to local hospitals. Of the injured, three are listed in critical condition. All victims were adults, and officials have not yet released their identities pending family notification.
Police said the shooting occurred outside, in the church’s parking lot, while a funeral service was underway inside the building.
No suspects in custody as investigation continues
As of late Wednesday night, no suspects were in custody, and investigators had not confirmed whether the shooting involved one gunman or multiple shooters. A motive remains unclear.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd told reporters that investigators do not believe the shooting was random, but emphasized that there is no indication the attack targeted a religion or the church itself. Authorities said they are following “solid leads” and actively working to identify those responsible.

Massive police response and area lockdown
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the area surrounding the church was flooded with law enforcement. Roughly 100 police vehicles responded, while helicopters circled overhead as officers secured the scene and searched for suspects.
Roads near the church remained closed for several hours as police urged the public to stay away from the area during the active investigation. Funeral attendees were later escorted out of the building by officers.
City leaders react to tragedy
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the violence, calling it an unacceptable act in a place meant for mourning and reflection.
“This should never have happened outside a place of worship. This should never have happened outside a celebration of life,” the mayor said in a public statement.

Community shaken as questions remain
The shooting has left the local community reeling, particularly given the setting and timing during a funeral service. Residents and faith leaders have expressed shock as investigators work to piece together what led to the violence.
Police have not yet announced arrests, and officials say more information will be released as the investigation progresses. For now, authorities continue to stress that the incident appears targeted but unrelated to religion.
Ongoing investigation
The case remains under active investigation by Salt Lake City police, with assistance from regional and state law enforcement agencies. Anyone with information related to the shooting has been urged to contact authorities.
As the city awaits answers, the incident stands as a grim reminder of how quickly violence can erupt—even in spaces traditionally associated with peace, worship, and remembrance.
